However, it did not catch on because the the browsers of the time were not designed to support the progressive features of PNG so web designers and creators had to incorporate it restrictedly. One of the main blocks faced by the format was Microsoft's Internet Explorer which was by far the most famous browsers of the time; IE had very little provision for PNG support which meant that the format could only be made use of in limited capacity. Then, matters changed after the availability of IE7; this new product from Microsoft has helped in increasing the utility of PNGs. So here is a look at three reasons why PNG is one of the most innovative image formats to be introduced so far: It is possible to create images that can be superimposed due to their transparency or alpha transparency: When you compare PNG with GIF, will notice that a very distinct advantage with PNG is that you will only be able to save any odd color in a transparent format through GIF this simply means that the color can be used regardless of it being opaque or transparent with just transparency in between; however, with PNG, you get a specific advantage; because the format supports semi transparent pixels. This feature gives you the ability to save a PNG picture with a soft drop shadow and then use it against a background of your choice. You can also use the image as a background with gradient or a water mark. The format allows for the gradual fading of hues from completely opaque to transparent, and hence you will be able to view the webpage below They look spectacular: It is a well known fact that PNG images give you extreme flexibility also; there are numerous other benefits to using this format. For instance, when you use a JPEG image, you lose a part of the details from the initial image every time you save the file, so after a while, you will be able to see a distinct deterioration in the finesse of the images. Even if, this concern has been resolved in in the file type and you will be able to store the pictures without sacrificing any information, GIF has a limited color palette of 256, which makes it quite ineffective if you are going to save a snap shot. But, if PNG is incorporated, you will get the best features of the image formats; you will be provided an extensive color display like with JPEG file type and it also provides managed color palette like GIF files. At the same time the compression of the file is lossless so the image stays put despite innumerable times of saving the file. PNG is self optimizing: A serious problem that web programmers need to handle very often is the issue where the brightness and the contrast ratio of the screen has to be regulated to see the the display appropriately; this problem occurs due to the Gamma settings of different monitors. Gamma is a technology used to spread the brightness across the display surface. However, diverse operating systems use a variety of Gamma settings. Hence, multimedia that is color corrected specifically for Windows may not look right on a Mac. Here again, in this situation the versatile PNG picture format comes to the rescue, in PNG, you can save the files with an inherent Gamma correction feature so whatever operating system you are working on; the Gamma settings will be changed on its own to display a picture with the perfect contrast and brightness. ![]()
