Icon sizes: 256x256, 64x64, 48x48, 32x32, 24x24, 16x16, 512x512 File formats: ICO, GIF, PNG, BMP Why Do You Need to Use PNG Images in Your Web Design? The pros of incorporating PNG image format in website designing over the different formats such as GIF and JPEG; the file type works well if you need to make really amazing and efficient web graphics that will prove alluring to your visitorsThe PNG file format was introduced quite a while back; it was brought out in the market in 1995/96 to cover the drawbacks of the popular GIF file format. However, it did not catch on because the early browsers were unable to support the advanced offerings of PNG so website designers and creators were compelled to incorporate it restrictedly. One of the major hindrances standing in the way was Microsoft's flagship product, Internet Explorer which was by far the most famous browsers of that period; IE had limited place for PNG support which equated to the fact that the format could only be used to a bare minimum. But, the scene metamorphosed after the availability of IE7; this new offering from Microsoft has proved immensely useful in increasing increasing the popularity of PNGs. So here is why at three reasons why PNG is is often regarded as the best image formats to be introduced so far: You can get transparent images or a property known as alpha transparency: When you analyze the features of GIF and PNG, you will see that one of the major differences is that you can only save any odd color as transparent in GIF this equates to the fact that the color can be used whether opaque or transparent with nothing in between with the use of PNG, you get a distinct advantage; because the format supports semi transparent pixels. This simply means that you can save a PNG image with a soft drop shadow and then fuse it with a background that suits your taste. The Image can also be used as a watermark or a gradient background. The format lets you incorporate the slow fading of hues from entirely opaque to see through, exposing the webpage below They look fantastic: Not only do you get surprising flexibility when using PNG images but also; there are numerous other benefits to using this format. For example, if you make use of the JPG Format, you lose a portion of the details from the initial image every time the file is saved, so after a while, you will be able to see a noticeable downgrade in the appearance of the images. Even if, this problem has been solved in in the file type and it is possible to store the files without losing any data, GIF has a highly restrictive 256 color palette, which makes it quite ineffective if you have to store a snap shot. But, with PNG, you will get the most desired benefits of both these formats; you will be provided a complete color display similar to JPEG format and it also provides managed color palette as seen in GIF files. At the same time the storage of the file is sans loss so the picture stays as it is despite innumerable times of saving the file. Self Optimization is possible in PNG: One of the hurdles that web designers have to tackle very often is the issue where the contrast and brightness of the commuter screen has to be changed to see the images properly; this happens due to the difference in the Gamma setting used for the different monitors. Gamma setting is a technique incorporated to distribute the brightness across the monitor display. However, various operating systems use varying Gamma settings. Hence, an image that is color corrected specifically for Windows may appear abnormal in Mac. Here again, in this case the flexible PNG format can prove useful, in PNG, you can save the pictures with a built in Gamma correction so despite the differences in operating systems; the Gamma settings will be realigned to display a picture with the amazing ratios of contrast as well as brightness.
