Icon sizes: 256x256, 48x48, 32x32, 24x24, 20x20, 16x16, 512x512 File formats: ICO, GIF, PNG, BMP Why Do You Need to Use PNG File Format in Your Web Design? The advantages of including PNG images in website creation over other image formats such as GIF and JPEG; the image format can be used to make better and efficient web graphics that will entice your visitorsThe PNG file type was introduced some time ago; it was brought out for consumers in 1995/96 to cover the drawbacks of the the common GIF image format. However, it failed to create ripples because the then browsers could not offer support to the state of the art attributes of PNG so website designers and creators were compelled to include it in their designs stingily. One of the major hurdles that marred the features of PNG was with Microsoft's Internet Explorer which was the most well known and widely used browsers of the time; IE had little or no provision for PNG support which meant that the format could only be incorporated to a bare minimum. But, things changed when IE7 was brought out; this latest browser from Microsoft has helped in increasing the utility of PNGs. So here is why at three reasons why PNG is one of the most innovative image formats around today: You will be able to create images that can be superimposed due to their transparency or a feature called alpha transparency: When you analyze the features of GIF and PNG, will notice that one of the major differences is that you can only save a specific color as transparent in GIF this equates to the fact that the color can be transformed whether opaque or transparent with just transparency in betweenbut when you use PNG, you get a distinct benefit; because the format can be used to produce semi transparency. This simply means that you can save a PNG image with a soft drop shadow and then fuse it with a background that suits your taste. Through this feature you will be able to use an image as a gradient background or water mark. The format gives you the option to use the slow fading of shades from entirely opaque to absolutely transparent, and hence you will be able to view the webpage that lies in the background They look fantastic: Apart from the fact, that you get amazing flexibility wit PNG images; there are numerous other advantages to incorporating this format. For example, if you choose a JPG image, you lose some of the data from the initial image whenever the file is saved, so after a while, you will be able to see a conspicuous downgrade in the appearance of the media. Even though, this issue has been solved in GIF and you will be able to store the files without compromising any data, GIF has a limited color palette of 256, which renders it quite ineffective if you want to save a snap shot. However, if PNG is incorporated, you can get the best benefits of the image formats; you get a full color display similar to JPEG file type and it also provides managed color palette like GIF files. Another advantage is that the storage of the picture is without loss so the image does not change despite innumerable times of saving the file. PNG is self optimizing: A major concern that web programmers have to tackle frequently is the fact that the brightness and the contrast ratio of the screen has to be changed to see the the display correctly; the issue comes into the picture due to various Gamma setting used in monitors from different vendors. Gamma is a technique that helps to spread the luminance across the display surface. However, diverse operating systems use distinct Gamma settings. So, an image that is color corrected specifically for Windows may not look right on a Mac. Again, in this situation the innovative PNG image type can prove useful, in PNG, you can save the pictures with a built in Gamma correction so despite the differences in operating systems; the Gamma settings will be automatically adjusted to show a file with the amazing contrast and brightness.
