Icon sizes: 256x256, 128x128, 48x48, 32x32, 24x24, 20x20, 16x16, 512x512 File formats: ICO, GIF, PNG, BMP Why Is it In Your Best Interest To Use PNG Images in Your Website Creation? The pros of using PNG images in web designing over the different image formats ;for instance, GIF and JPEG; the image format works well if you need to make really amazing and wonderful icons that will prove alluring to your customersThe PNG file type was introduced quite a while back; it was brought out in the market around 95/96 to make up for the shortcomings of the traditional GIF file format. However, it did not catch on because the early browsers were not designed to support the progressive attributes of PNG so internet designers and developers were forced to use it stingily. One of the primary blocks standing in the way was Microsoft's Internet Explorer which was the most well known and widely used browsers of the time; IE had little or no provision for PNG support which meant that the format could only be used to a bare minimum. However, matters metamorphosed when IE7 was brought out; this latest offering from Microsoft has helped in increasing the utility of PNGs. So lets take a look at three reasons why PNG is one of the most useful image formats in the market today: You can get transparent images or a feature called alpha transparency: When you pitch GIF against PNG, it will become apparent that one of the major differences is that you you will be restricted to saving a specific color transparently through the use of GIF which means that the color can be used regardless of it being opaque or transparent with no other color in between with the use of PNG, you get a serious advantage; because the format is capable of producing semi transparent pixels. This simply means that you can save a PNG file with a soft drop shadow and then use it against a background of your choice. Through this feature you will be able to use an image as a gradient background or water mark. The format allows for the smooth fading of colors from completely opaque to absolutely transparent, and hence you will be able to view the webpage underneath They look fantastic: Apart from the fact, that you get amazing flexibility wit PNG images; there are a myriad of other advantages to using this format. For instance, when you use a JPEG image, you lose some of the details from the original file whenever you save the file, so eventually, you will notice a distinct deterioration in the appearance of the media. Even if, this problem has been solved in in the file type and you can store the pictures without compromising any information, GIF only allows for a limited 256 color palette, which makes it quite useless if you are going to store a photograph. But, with PNG, you can get the perfect features of the two file types; you get a full color display like with JPEG images and it also supports managed color palette as seen in GIF files. Another advantage is that the compression of the picture is lossless so the photograph stays put even if you save the file several times. PNG is self optimizing: One of the hurdles that web programmers face on a daily basis is the issue where the brightness and the contrast ratio of the screen has to be regulated to see the pictures appropriately; this happens due to various Gamma setting used in monitors from different vendors. Gamma is a technique incorporated to scatter the brightness across the display surface. However, different operating systems use distinct Gamma settings. So, multimedia that is color corrected specifically for Windows may not look right on a Mac. Here again, in this situation the innovative PNG format comes to the rescue, in PNG, you can store the images with an inherent Gamma correction feature so whatever operating system you are working on; the Gamma settings will be realigned to show a picture with the amazing ratios of contrast as well as brightness.
